2019
The Year of Dr. Robeson
2019 marks the 100th anniversary of Dr. Paul Robeson's graduation from Rutgers College in 1919. Robeson played an integral role in the founding of the Civic League of Greater New Brunswick (formerly the Urban League). He put on a benefit concert and all proceeds went to helping the Urban League of New Brunswick establish its affiliation with the National Urban League. The League will honor Robeson's many contributions to the advancement of the community and his incredible legacy this year and always. Check out some of the ways we are commemorating Paul Robeson.

Rutgers Campus Tour
In April, students received a personal tour of the College Ave campus at Rutgers. Students got to visit the brand new Paul Robeson Plaza and check out the Robeson Exhibit at Alexander Library.

Paul Robeson Blvd
New Brunswick city council members voted unanimously to change the name of Commercial Avenue to Paul Robeson Blvd. Civic League students attended the city council meeting to show their support and be a part of history.

Paul Robeson Community School for the Arts
In September 2018, the New Brunswick community celebrated the official reopening of the newly renovated Paul Robeson Community School for the Arts. Our students witnessed some of the construction process earlier in the year!

Feaster Park Renovation
The Civic League has played an integral role in advocating for the renovation of Feaster park, which is adjacent to the Paul Robeson Community School for the Arts. Plans for renovation include a life-size statue of Dr. Robeson.
